Plano West Senior High School Reviews
Rating 4.08 out of 5 1,195 reviews
Studying at Plano West was a wonderful experience; I had great connections with both teachers and other students. Not only were teachers approachable and friendly, but they were also wonderful at teaching the subject at hand. As a student with a lot of APs, I am always scared that the classes would overwhelm me with too much difficult material. However, all of the teachers I've had at Plano West had put in more than sufficient effort to ensure that every student understands. On the other hand, since the student population is also large, there is a lot of competition. In addition, hallways are usually congested because of the number of students at the school. If I could change something at my school, I would attempt to build additional buildings to make buildings less crowded. I would also like to see the school student population become more diverse since it currently is consisted of mostly Asians.
Plano West is an extremely competitive school that challenges students through its rigorous courses and workload. The school offers a multitude of opportunities for students to partake in, including AP courses, dual credit, eSchool, CBE, and more. The course selection also expands from a vast amount of specialties and allows students to discover their passions through experimentation. The school also has many clubs and activities. However, as I said earlier, the school is highly competitive and extremely focused on academics, therefore, GPA is a focal point in many students' lives, making it difficult to rank in the top 10%. This competitive nature can lead to an obsession with grades. Though doing well in school is important, it should not overtake a person's mental and physical health. Therefore, I would like to see a change in the atmosphere of the school, which can be implemented by reducing the stress of receiving a bad grade (i.e. test retakes up to 100, extra credit, etc.).
Plano West Senior High School is full of opportunities. The musical program has changed my life. I have been able to preform in the biggest stage in Texas as part of the Honor Orchestra, which Plano West has been selected as for more than 10 years. Additionally, I have been able to participate in their Jazz program which boasts of 5 consecutive selections for the national Essentially Ellington competition. In addition, the academics are held to a very high standard. The rigor compares to university curriculum and encourages students to put 100% of their effort into securing a great future. Unfortunately, this has caused certain toxic environments in which students compete for the highest rank and secure a spot in the top 6%. However, the ability to focus on music as well as multiple sports teams, such as the nationally recognized volleyball team, makes it a school that panders to any type of student and allows them to succeed no matter what.
