There is a massive sexism problem within administration and teachers. It's actually incredible. Being an arts school, there are many more female-identifying students than males. There is a perfect opportunity given to this school to uplift women as they move into the workforce. But the reality is exactly the opposite. It seems that every opportunity to perform, or have leadership roles in the grades, or even just in class, the male students are put above the non-male students. A non-male student could be incredibly well-rounded, have good grades, volunteer work, after-school activities, etc., and be passed up for opportunities in favor of a mediocre male student. It's so extremely transparent and discouraging to everyone who is not a man. Not to mention some teachers have clear favoritism of the male students. It's a huge problem that never gets mentioned. It's especially bad in the dance department where a lot of the male dancers are given special parts just because they're male.
The academics are good, at least in CAS and AP classes. The class selection isn't as good as a larger school because of the limited number of teachers and students, but there are still plenty of good options. The art classes are good and people seem to like and appreciate them, but there's often a lack of engagement in academic classes, especially PSP ones. As another reviewer said, the gender imbalance leads to male students being favored. We are very heavily encouraged to go into the fields of our art major in college, and it feels sort of alienating if you don't want to go to art school as a visual art major, etc. The extracurriculars are minimal and the schedule is very long and inconvenient. It's an hour longer than most other schools, so you have to be at school from 7:35 to 3:45 every day and the commute is longer for most people because of the location. The school itself feels fairly safe but the surrounding area does not, Downtown is not a very pleasant place to be in.
Very challenging yet rewarding school. It takes motivation and determination to apply yourself but worth every second of it! They focus on your main talents and prepare you for post secondary education in your field.
