Founded in 1778, Phillips Academy, also known as Andover, is an independent, coeducational secondary school with an expansive worldview and a legacy of academic excellence. It is a high school that stands ready to meet, match, and expand the minds and passions of some of the brightest students in the nation and the world. It is a place of great tradition and innovation. Because of its size, Andover offers enormous depth and breadth of activity and opportunity while still feeling like a personal place. With a roster of over 300 courses, 150+ electives, plus independent study and study abroad, the opportunities for growth are limitless. Andover’s “need blind” admission policy is one of the most comprehensive and generous among secondary schools.

I am extremely grateful to PA. Coming from a lower income background, Andover has opened doors and introduced me to countless opportunities. I’ve been able to gain new passions, such as running and activism, and practice my old ones under incredible instruction and with access to fantastic resources. My only issue with the school is that it’s an incredibly stressful environment for 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 year old students - meaning students are handling both normal teenage stress (pertaining to popularity or pop culture), along with the stress of elite college admissions. There’s not much done by the administration to combat this, meaning students have to tackle it themselves, resulting in people getting overwhelmed, and sometimes leaving the school. However, most of us stick it out, but at what cost?
All in all, I would recommend Andover if you’re someone who feels as if your current environment is too restricting and you want to broaden your horizons and meet new people.

Phillips Academy offers an excellent education for the student who asks, "What more is there?" "Who else can I meet?" "I want to learn about..." Andover is a large school supported by passionate and intelligent faculty, students and staff who all contribute to the intellectual and supportive environment. Nearly half of the students are on scholarship thereby enabling a diversity of domestic and international students to access the campus and curriculum. According to my kids, everyone there is excited to learn, happy to help out and passionate about what they are doing. They are thankful for their opportunity.
I give Andover 4 stars because unless you come in as a D1 athlete, they don't support a student to grow into an athlete & will cut students at a low level. I believe all students should be supported despite whether they play in a game. Lastly, the cost of attending is not fully transparent: For those who do not qualify: tuition is $70,000 plus 4%+ a year so plan ahead.

My experience at Andover was challenging in so many ways to my physical and mental health, so much so that there were many times I questioned why I ever enrolled in the school. However, after finally committing to a school, Williams College, and beginning to reap the networking and experience benefits from my difficult experience I have no regrets in saying that my experience at Andover was well worth it. To anyone going into Andover just understand that it can definitely be a lot but you more than have the ability to accomplish all they ask if you really search yourself and learn to tap into your potential.
