I've been here for all four years and I love this school! Truly, the best part of the school is the teachers. Of course, you'll have a few that aren't your favorite, but I've found teachers I really admire. They are here because they love to teach. The student body as a whole is also really great, at least for my years here. We went through a lot of administration struggles, but what pulled us together was our support for our teachers and the shared values that we have as students. The course load is challenging but manageable, but I also felt really well prepared from my elementary school. All that being said, Payton has many normal issues like any high school (some student drama, mediocre/bad food, people that you like and don't like, etc).
Although Walter Payton is a PWI, the school culture and atmosphere are very welcoming and feels like a community. There are people of many cultures and backgrounds which makes finding friends easier and natural in this school setting. Even academically the teachers are very welcoming and want you to succeed. There are afterschool and enrichment clubs and programs created by students and teachers that offer tutoring and community building. There are clubs that allow you to explore your hobbies and find new ones! Also, clubs that connect you to others of similar ethnic/ racial backgrounds as you like BSU (Black student union) and LAC (Latin American coalition). Walter Payton wants everyone to feel like they belong and makes sure to discuss injustices that happen in the world around us to promote allyship and support minority students. Overall Walter Payton offers great academic classes that prepare you well for college and makes sure you know you belong and are capable of great things.
I attended my freshman and sophomore year of high school and I have to say it was a overall really great time ! As far as academics, they are literally the best! Most of the teachers did an amazing job helping my peers and I to be able to understand the material while also succeeding. Some of the students were “off” (rude, not ones to be friends with), but you find that everywhere! Honesty Walter Payton was extremely hard to get into when I got accepted, but since there has been a new principal and it seems like she is letting anyone In the school as of 1.5 years ago! Despite some of the people, It’s such a lovely school itself !
