Being a senior member of the IB program, I have been apart of a rigorous academic environment for years, however the culture fueled entirely on competing with your classmates and becoming the ideal "best". Palm Harbor's administration is openly criticized by parents, faculty and students as they often are dysfunctional or will avoid conflict rather than confront an individual's challenges. Be prepared for avoided emails, calls and even incident reports. The IB program has many gems of educators, however as of recently the turnover rate has been astounding, leading towards many new and unqualified teachers being recruited leaving many of the students relying on themselves alone to teach themselves material or in some cases help the teachers understand the extent of their curriculum. In terms of facilities bathrooms and sinks are constantly broken, with flooding a constant issue in all restrooms. Bullying, especially among minorities is discouraged among admin, but is often tolerated.
Palm Harbor University high school has truly changed my life. As a person whom is very enthusiastic about medicine and anything within that wondrous field of science, I’d signed up for the medical program. Being in the program, I had a large variety of teachers whom had not only valued education but also connecting with students. Everyone here was so kind and are not the stereotypical ‘divided into cliques’ kind of way like they show in the movies. Everyday, I walk down the halls to smiling teachers standing patiently by their doors, greeting me. I’ve started off my high school experience during covid, a time where I’d spent the entirety of the school year online. I thought it’d be difficult to make friends and accustom myself to the layout of the school afterward, but because of how great this school was those worries now appear as funny because, now knowing the school, such things are very easy to fix. I’d had a wonderful time at this school and it had truly changed my life.
Palm Harbor University High is on top of it when it comes to academics. They have several electives, college classes, and programs to help a child thrive that other schools don't offer. The medical and IB programs always do well and are jam packed with students wanting to get in. As for college readiness, Palm Harbor does an adequate job for helping students become ready. College classes are offered if students want to try and get ahead. Students even have the option of taking classes to learn what to expect from college. Another good point is that most of the teachers and faculty are well liked by students and are used as safe places for them to vent and relax around. Safety is also a huge part when considering school. Palm Harbor has strict rules for gates, doors, and drill practices so no one is unprepared or put in harms way. School spirit is also a big part of Palm Harbors pride. There are pep rallies with the football players, cheerleaders, and band to get the students hyped.
