The school is mostly welcoming and enjoyable, and most people do not care about your grade at all, like my Gifted Enrichment Class with Mr. Morris. The only problem is how most clubs are rarely shown, outside of a morning announcement that most people view their phone through. Also, the Musical program (and some other Band/Chorus/Orchestra programs) are absolutely horrible. They should put more effort into the Musical and other programs, although this year is a good turning point with some new teachers, especially the new Chorus teacher, Mrs. Crawford. Overall great school, needs some work on the effort placed into Musicals and club activites/programs.
OJR has been a very good school for me. I have benefited from the sports programs and have enjoyed being a part of multiple successful teams and will be participating in sports in college. On the academic side, I have always felt that the teachers and coaches have our best interest in mind and help us when they can. As a student who needed special help due to a learning disability, the school helped me overcome my disability by constantly working with me to improve. During this process they never made me feel bad or embarrassed about being on a IEP and needing help with reading and writing. With their help, I am graduating with close to a 4.0 and have excelled in ELA and all subjects where heavy reading and writing are needed. I feel that with the help they provided I am prepared for college where I will be studying Biology/pre-med. The facilities are pretty good but we have a very small gym for the size of our school. The classrooms are up date and have the latest technolgy.
Owen J. Roberts is a good school that provides opportunity for advanced students to excel and get involved in their school and community, but also provides all and any extra help needed to students who struggle both academically and emotionally. The staff is all very helpful and are almost all open to coming in early or running tutoring sessions for large groups after school. It’s very easy for students to get involved in clubs or start their own as well as create social and fun opportunities for their peers. Funds seem to be distributed evenly as the football team, and other boys’ get similar funding to the girls sports teams, the band, JROTC, and the arts. All around it is a positive environment that is safe and supportive for students.
