Outstanding teachers are the common strong point throughout Orono’s Schools. Amazing - a huge thank you to them! It’s why we’re here. Socially, however, there is much to be desired. The Middle School (and District) administration steers away from any controversial issues, like any form of social justice, diversity (or the lack thereof), inclusion, or support for students who in any way veer off the path of white, straight, conformity. Because that is the community they serve. White, very affluent, conformists. If your child is a white Christian athlete (nothing wrong with that) and for whom any other type of person is utterly superfluous, than this may be an ideal place for you. If your child is an intellectual, an artist, and/or checks - or is interested in being around people from - any other box, this might not be the most welcoming or inclusive place for you.
The English program this year at Orono was amazing! Math this year at Orono Middle school was a literal disaster, tons of stress and pointless pain, just because of one 7th-grade math teacher had no idea how to teach a math class! The computers and recourses Orono gives to the students are HORRIBLE, and I think every single student at Orono can fully agree with that statement. The kids are amazing, very sweet, and talented. I wish my school could be more diverse but Orono doesn't get to decide that, I enjoy being at Orono!
Our daughter was severely bullied exposed to hard drugs and toxic culture. The teachers and community at large are great, but something is wrong with the administration and the way children are allowed to behave toward one another and their teachers. Academic pressure is overblown and fear based. Keep a close eye on your child's mental health if you choose to have them attend.
