Okemos is to me the epitome of the All American Highschool. It's big enough that you're never bored, but small enough that everybody knows everybody. Friend groups from sports and clubs tend to overlap, making for a pretty decent social scene. Academics are very collaborative as well; even the most high achieving AP students are relatively laid back about classes. The rich culture of the student body is another plus-from German exchange students to ABGs, OHS manages to be ideally diversified without forcing it. Moving on to the most important part-the actual schooling. To put it simply, the teachers are amazing. You can really tell they care and put a lot of effort into helping us learn. Field trip and enrichment opportunities are abundant. The acceptance rate to UMich isn't too shabby either. Location is alright, but it was nicer back when it was natural and not surrounded by dilapidated liquor stores and car dealerships. Within walking distance of some nice strip malls, though. 4/5
The education and the resources available for everyone is superb. However, there are a lot of shortcomings to the social environment, which I feel is important given that in many classes participation is a requirement. There are so many cliques, and those cliques have first priority when it comes to teachers. And the teachers that engage in this extremely obvious favoring of students over the others are extremely unprofessional. I think it's generally unprofessional for teachers to have their students' instagram dms, and frequently communicate with them over that. I get that they want to form good relationships with their students, but boundaries should definitely exist. Also, there's a lot of forced celebration for sports, like the pep rallies. I'd go to the library and do homework than be forced to sit among the whole school for a pep rally about the school football. Every year, my mom would excuse me from this nightmare of an event. Make it outside of school time, please.
Okemos High School gives the students a wide range of opportunities in many ways. Academics are known for being challenging but helpful for college-readiness for those interested in post-secondary education. The music experience provided at OHS is also phenomenal, boasting bands, choirs, and orchestras known statewide. Resources/opportunities to support students interested in music are also very extensive and inclusive. While there are still faults to this school as all schools nationwide, it has given me chances I am extremely grateful for.
