Okemos High School Reviews
Rating 4.02 out of 5 255 reviews
I learned so much during my time at OHS. The faculty and staff and administration were very supportive and they all strived to make our educational experience fun, memorable, but also challenging. There were difficult times during our high school years and our district was always very supportive of the students well being and mental health. I consider myself fortunate to have attended Okemos Public Schools and I have an excellent educational base because of it! The best part was definitely the teachers. Some cared more than others and they really made up for any shortcoming of the others. The worst part of my experience was that at times I found it difficult to balance my academic requirements with my social life. If I could change anything, I would say that I wish that I had taken more time to have fun and to have not stressed so much about my grades.
When I went there, I was always treated well by peers, teachers, and upperclassmen. Okemos offered a plethora of things to do, from extra-curriculars on dealing with sports, to educational ones, about biology, business, or life. Furthermore, the curriculum they were giving was offered advanced levels, and displayed their notion that students have personalized schedules, that suits them for their future. Also, I always felt safe and accommodated, as a Muslim, I never had to suffer prejudice because of the kind character of everyone around me. Not only that, but me needing to pray was never frowned upon, but accepted welcomingly, whenever I needed a room, they offered one for me without hesitation, almost as if we were all one family. It wasn't just that, there was a sense of connectivity amongst one another, and a feeling of security the moment you walked in, as if you weren't being judged. Okemos High School and the people in it, were something I could never forget, nor do I want to.
The worst part about going to this school is ending up with a math teacher who doesn't do things to help me get to where I need to be. I didn't have a choice to switch teachers because she was the only one that taught the class I needed to I decided to put up with it. I would get ridiculous amounts of points taken off of tests and quizzes because of small and minor errors like forgetting to simplify. While other teachers I had would take off only half a point of those sorts of mistakes, this teacher would take off up to 2 points when the whole question was worth 3 points. How is it fair to me to lose more than half the points for the question when the majority of the answer was correct? She was always stubborn and insisted on doing things one way and one way only. When another one of my classmates suggested an easier and more straightforward method of solving the question, she shot down his suggestion in such a rude way that I even heard him sniffling for a bit during class.
