Ocean Lakes High School Reviews
Rating 4.12 out of 5 678 reviews
Ocean Lakes has a large variety of classes that other schools in the area do not offer. This includes: sign language, organic and biochemistry, technology classes, and many more! The majority of teachers are capable and great, but some are simply relying on tenure. The building is in decent condition, but has definitely seen better days. There are plenty of resources available to students and the school regularly promotes events to give students more information regarding future paths.
I love Ocean Lakes! From the moment I stepped in the doors as a freshman, I knew this building would truly end up feeling like a second home. I have met some of the best people at this school, including friends, teachers, and admin! This school has rigorous academics, but it is balanced with how much fun we have in between all of the hard work. There's never a dull moment, but the students are kind, respectful, and welcoming, and create a super friendly environment. The teachers are phenomenal, as well. Not only do they all exceed at preparing their students for tests, exams, and college, but they are all so kind and generous with their time and talents and will become your biggest supporters. There is always so much to get involved with at OL; there's clubs and classes to fit every interest and theres always fun activities going on like spirit days, pep rallies, festivals, fundraisers, and more! It's true what they say -- we really are the best at the beach!
During my 4 years at Ocean Lakes, we have had many issues involving the staff as well as my fellow peers. We have, unfortunately, had staff members arrested along with some students during these years. However, the administrative team at Ocean Lakes has made it their mission to make the school a happy and healthy place. This team has given important information to the parents and students and ensured of the communities' safety. They have implemented many programs to assist those with drug issues, as well as allowing students to create clubs to assist with the mental wellbeing of the students. One club, entitled Dolphin Minds Matter, has created slideshows to describe certain mental health disorders and the best ways to cope with things like anxiety. Ocean Lakes has advertised this specific club more than any other, especially with our amazing counseling staff. All in all, Ocean Lakes does have some flaws, but it still remains one of the best educational facilities in Virginia Beach.
