I transferred to Ocean Lakes my Junior year and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The school is beautiful and the staff is so supportive and they offer to help you before you even have a chance to ask. I have had the amazing opportunities to take advanced classes that truly challenge me a prepare me for college. The fine arts are amazing, and they are like a second family for me. Ocean lakes is one of the best schools in Virginia Beach!
Great teachers and motivated students. Lots of diversity in all areas, with lots of clubs/activities to choose from. Sports teams are above average and football is a particularly big deal. School spirit is a little lacking; spirit days and senior nights (etc) don’t get a lot of attention. The academy is an amazing addition with great teachers and students who are motivated and committed to success. Lots of resources for college abs a culture that rewards going after it, but also support for those who go into trades/military/etc.
Going to Ocean Lakes is a wonderful and unforgettable experience. Most teachers here are supportive and genuinely care about their students. I suggest building close relationships with your teachers and getting to know them as people. However, there are teachers who teach in their preferred method, regardless of the opinion of their students.
Like other schools, you need a pass to go anywhere or do anything. Guidance counselors are responsible for large groups of people, so getting to know them is a little harder. The academics are wonderful in the math and science area, but there are not many classes for students interested in Computer Science. The "extra" academy classes mostly focus on biology and chemistry. Overall, it's a great school!
