Amazing teachers, great staff, and great class options! I was shocked by the quality of the teachers and classes, and the patience and kindness of the staff. However, when there were bad teachers, they were bad. Some teachers would obviously pick favorites, or behave aggressively and rudely towards students without any real repercussions. The student culture was also not very positive. There is a clear “segregation” between generally white, wealthier and PTA students, and others which definitely isn’t eased by the structure of the school and its activities. The school is extremely cliquey, and if you want a diverse and open environment, it might not be your first choice. The campus was also under construction, which was inconvenient but necessary for future improvement, however the traffic and flow of traffic outside the school was completely awful. Definitely the worst school traffic I have been familiar with in the suburbs. Otherwise, definitely a good school overall.
The education is exceptional. The curriculum is standard, but it does challenge the students, which a lot of them need. Although the education, athletics, and the arts have very good programs, there are many, many flaws within this school, as in social aspects. Some of the administrators take complains about sexual assault, harassment, and bullying very lightly. They tend to ignore the students when they go to them for help because they were either harassed for being in the LGBTQ+ community or even if they were sexually assaulted on school grounds. These problems do not take away from the amazing education these students receive, but they do contribute to these students mental health. These issues make Oakton High School a place where students don’t feel safe.
As a Senior in Oakton High School currently, I have faced the curriculum and teaching while being in-person and virtual. Overall, the teachers have done an amazing job to be inclusive and teach material well. The staff is very considerate of all students as long as there is clear communication between the student, their family, and the school. As for the opportunities, there is a good mix of athletics, academics and clubs. It is extremely easy to start something and all students are very involved in some sort of activity throughout each high school year. The only thing I would tweak for this school would be it's course offerings. When compared with Chantilly High School, they can be more offerings so that students in FCPS can compete better with their neighboring schools when coming to course load (APs, IBs, academies, etc).
