Oakland School for the Arts is an amazing community for young artists, and one I'm super grateful to have been a part of. It's definitely made for artsy kids though, rather than those looking for a lot of academic rigor. There is a lot of academic teacher turnover, but the arts teachers for the most part stay consistent and are truly the glue holding the whole operation together! Despite sort of average stats, I give OSA a high rating because of everything I gained from such an arts-friendly and supportive learning environment. The shift to online arts classes seems to be doing alright.
OSA is a beautiful institution that was founded on the promise of giving students in Oakland an impactful arts education for free, especially to those who are unable to afford private lessons or classes. The arts teachers are wonderful and are all active artists and performers. We were granted incredible performance and educational opportunities in the Vocal Music program regularly. The school's demographics have been severely impacted by gentrification in Oakland and the schools growing popularity and competition among non-Oakland residents. Students and faculty are working to reinstate the school's initial purpose of giving underserved communities opportunities in the arts which led to a decision to halt auditions for the school. Our budget is also significantly lower than it once was and our teachers are paid much less than they should be, leading to many of them leaving. I hope the school I got into in 2014 is able to revitalize and give more students the experiences I had.
I love specific parts of my experience at OSA. For example, the Visual Art program has always been my reason for loving my school, and every teacher that department is amazing. The school has a big problem with teacher turnover, but there are some real gem teachers I've had, and some awful teach yourself or learn nothing teachers. The students have a lot of passion, but there's been a lot of tension between pockets of students and the administration within the school in the high school level. I'm very glad to have attended this school for as long as I have.
