Hi, I’m a sophomore, my experience in Oakland High was good and I’ll be sharing some of the whys. On my first day, I was feeling super anxious, but the staffs and teachers were so friendly, open, and always helping students. There was always some type of event going on too, whether it was giving away school supplies, jobs offering and support, internships from art, technology, health, services, and much more. Everywhere was an opportunity to engage. The lunch is pretty good. Talking about engaging, lets discuss about clubs, a huge list actually, they have almost every sport, interest, so on and if you don’t any or want to create your own, you can! The classrooms are neat, not too crowded, friendly, positive, safe, and warming. The school is huge on non-bullying, and making sure all students succeed.

I love school it’s such a fun time! I get to truly be myself amongst friends and use school as an outlet when home life gets too chaotic. I am grateful for Oakland High because of the support and the quality of education my teachers provide.

School gives me access to programs and organizations that has shaped my life, one of which was BuildOn. BuildOn is a non profit volunteer organization that takes young students from any background to achieve the common goal of making a difference in their community and in their student’s lives. We have service projects every week that vary from working with elders, giving food to the homeless, and hanging with kids to teach them their ABC’s. I found it amazing how I could help my community through small interactions and only a few hours of my day. It was a great way to be productive and get out of my chaotic household, while I benefited from hands on change and connected to people who shared the same passion.
For two years now, I have been an Academy Ambassador at my high school representing the Visual Art Academy Magnet Program (VAAMP). Being an ambassador takes a lot of responsibility and training - I often give tours for incoming 9th graders and visitors at my school. In the tours, I show them around campus and give them facts about the school and why they should join VAAMP. My inspiration for being an Ambassador for VAAMP comes from wanting to give back to the community and helping students realize the importance of education and staying in school. To be an Academy Ambassador one has to be in a rigorous Leadership training class, and the decision to be made an Academy Ambassador lies with the Co-Directors of VAAMP. As an Ambassador I was also able to hone my public speaking and persuasion skills. I have been a part\of the school Leadership Class for 3 years - we plan events for the school such as Homecoming, Winter Ball, Multicultural week, and our teacher luncheon.
