As a small charter school, NYOS provides a very well connected community among the students and teachers. This community enables students to work more effectively with their teachers to take control of their academic journeys and fosters tight-knit extracurricular activity communities that promote fellowship among the student body.
While these opportunities, alongside available courses, are lacking, NYOS makes up for it with committed teachers, parents, and peers in the student body, as well as manifesting plans to expand opportunities for students. So, while I would like to see NYOS take on more courses and extracurricular opportunities to enable students, its current condition allows students to take advantage of the opportunities they do have within their grasp at NYOS, making them more enjoyable and empowering.

Since it is a charter school, classes are small, which allows students to get one-on-one help with their teachers, rather than having to fight to stand out among hundreds of other students vying for attention. The teachers want students to understand the material, and they go to great lengths to make sure that everyone is participating in the class.

The administration is super friendly as well–they are always willing to listen to student concerns.

The school culture is very vibrant. Since classes are small, every student has the opportunity to know just about every other student in his/her grade, so going to school doesn't feel like you are thrown into a prison system–it feels like you are welcomed into a happy family.

The one thing that NYOS lacks, unfortunately, is school resources. Some of the computers currently at NYOS are almost 10 years old. The reason the school cannot afford better computers is the fact that charter schools do not get as much funding as public schools.
I've been at NYOS since the first grade and I am currently a senior. While like any school you find anywhere, NYOS has its flaws and places it can improve on. However, I cannot imagine a life where I was anywhere else. I am really happy with how NYOS has shaped who I am. The small communities and the connections you can build with your teachers is truly amazing. It's not for everyone, but I would definitely recommend most people give it a chance. It has been incredibly worth it.
