Norwich Free Academy, incorporated in 1854, is the only remaining privately governed, independently endowed regional day academy in the state of Connecticut. It serves 8 partner districts (Bozrah, Canterbury, Franklin, Lisbon, Norwich, Preston, Sprague, and Voluntown). As a school of choice, NFA accepts students who choose to attend, and by agreement, their sending communities fund tuition. NFA also serves private tuition including 60 international students. Located on a beautifully landscaped 38 acre, nine-building campus, nestled like a small New England College on the east side of the city of Norwich, the Academy serves 2,256 students (Oct. 1, 2018 census). It is diverse ethnically, economically, and linguistically. Students speak more than 33 different primary languages at home; 272 students (11.6%), born outside the U.S. Today’s NFA is 1.5% American Indian, 7.8% Asian, 16.6% Black, 53.8% Caucasian, 15.6% Hispanic, .6% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and 4.2% other.

I had an amazing experience at NFA. My teachers from freshman year to senior year were very knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. I enjoyed having a variety of classes to choose from that challenged me to be a better student. The guidance counselors helped me make my schedule and explore colleges. The diversity of students made me learn from my peers and make really good friends. The academic environment is challenging, but supportive. There are many people like teachers and administrative personnel willing to help with any problem. They offered PSATs, college fairs, and career fairs. Going into college, the rigor of my classes were similar to NFA , so I did not struggle with the difficulty of my classes. I felt prepared and confident entering my freshman year of college.
I enjoyed being able to take so many college credit classes as a high school student. There are so many academic and extracurricular opportunities at the school that I would not want to have gone to any other school. The faculty and staff are amazing! I made my best friends at school that still remain to this day. I was a part of many sports teams and clubs on campus.
