The biggest thing to keep in mind about Northwood is that it’s in Pittsboro. As far as small town schools go, NW is a striver. It’s administration really tries to play the cards they’ve been dealt. There are obviously some flaws, yes, but for where it is on the map, the funding it has received, and the amount of students it has to educate, Northwood really really tries. My only real complaint is that they’ve struggled to find good/consistent math teachers (which isn’t really their fault) and while their arts program is Amazing for what it is, the art teachers are a little too self involved/trying to relive their own high school days (pick favorites/participate in gossip/terrible boundaries). But what can you expect? They’re “artists”. Overall, wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else growing up. Went to the best school in the country for what I was studying for undergrad and felt competitive with my peers from private top tier high schools without being an elitist.
This high school offers a wide range of classes, electives & clubs that appeal to just about any interest. The partnership with the local community college allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. Teachers are highly committed and administration is great! The only downsides are the actual buildings, which are very old and need lots of work, and the extreme overcrowding. A new high school is slated to open next year which should help alleviate overcrowding.
For spending all four years at Northwood High School, I would like to call it my home. However, it is hard to call a place home when it has failed you and your other classmates multiple times. I was bullied my freshman and sophomore year and my teacher wasn't even aware or connected. My friend tried so hard to change classes so that she could boost her GPA up and no one in the front office was willing to hear her out or help her. The administration at Northwood only interferes if the situation is about dress code or sports.
Now don't get me wrong, not everything about Northwood is completely a letdown. I have had the honor of being taught by some of the most amazing teachers who not only actually taught me about their subjects, but about life itself. Some teachers at Northwood love having an impact on their students and connecting with them on a one-on-one level.
