Northwood High School Reviews
Rating 4.04 out of 5 556 reviews
I transferred to Northwood Highschool from another school in California. When I was a new student, I was embraced by staff such as my councilor in a way that made me feel safe. They helped me get sorted into the new school, giving me all the information I needed for a easy transition to happen. And it was! The staff deeply care about the students health and wellbeing, while still ensuring that we get a proper education. All the teachers that I've had, have been amazing in their fields, helping me become the best at the certain subject. The schools atmosphere is amazing as well. The open space, with nature filled radiance touches the school. I absolutely adore how there is open space at in the school's field's rather than it being filled with a cement stadium like other schools. It gives a relaxing vibe to the school and the athletics department as well.
Northwood High School stands out in many ways. Northwood's humanities curriculum, taking a joint history-English class for the first two years of school, allows for an easy transition into AP history and honors English classes. However, our implemented integrated science system prevents many students, especially those who want to pursue a STEM major in college, from a chance to delve deeper into the specific sciences, as Advanced Placement classes cannot be taken until students reach their junior and senior years. As such, these students feel obligated to "double-up" on AP science classes during their junior year, placing a large amount of stress into their lives.
Northwood teachers are starkly contrasted in their ways of teaching; I have had both passionate teachers who allowed for easy learning, and teachers who halfheartedly went through their lessons and did not put in effort in helping their students. Overall, NHS has great qualities but many areas of improvement.

Northwood High School is a school with many good things, but many shortcomings, as well. For instance, the Academic side of this school is unparalleled. It is challenging and constructive.
However, the administration is difficult to navigate. It is difficult to understand its guidelines, especially around its club policies.
Furthermore, minority students may have a difficult time finding support. The school is 60% Asian-American, so I am referring to other minorities in regards to race, as well as LGBTQ+ people. I am Asian myself, so I will focus on the latter. As an openly LGBTQ+ student at Northwood High, I have found the administration to be at best, indifferent in regards to Homophobia and Transphobia on campus. While they emphasize its "focus" on safety and equality, I have not seen concrete actions by the school to improve. The student body is generally not homophobic, but somewhat transphobic. And, as always, there are ignorant people, especially in sports (I'm in sports).
