I’ve attended this school for three years, going on my fourth, and I think this school overall is pretty good. I think what makes this school so good are the teachers and students. The teachers really work to get us students to where we need to be, and prep us for life out of school. The principles and (past—we now have ALL new counselors) counselors aren’t the best and there has been some backlash because of that. The students do work well together, however. Everyone knows how to get along and accomplish what needs to be done. The school offers a diversity of classes that meet the needs of everyone here!

Overall, Northwest High School has incredible opportunities for career-readiness and has amazing academics because of amazing teachers. Also, there is an infrastructure in place that supports extra-curricular. However, the school lacks a culture of inclusivity, and it feels like there are many cliques, although this is somewhat beyond the control of the administration and more of a result of our location. Additionally, while the school has made attempts to address mental health, Northwest does not utilize the students while trying to understand the issues that they face, and because of that their attempts are not often fruitful. Finally, the school struggles to address issues like substance abuse in humanizing ways, and instead leans towards criminalizing the students.
I have enjoyed my 4 years and the bonds the teachers are so ready to make. I'm a heavily involved leader through extracurriculars such as choir, BESL, NHS, and volleyball. Every program I was apart of was dedicated to success and the students in them. However, I feel they give a false sense of freedom, which becomes suffocating. INvest is a built-in study period for students to choose how to spend their time. This past year, however, it's purpose has gone undermined by becoming very restrictive, making it harder for students to go where they need to go. There is also a lack of trust between the administration and the students by locking most of the bathrooms, limiting restroom time, and enforcing "moving hallways." This has created an exhausting environment where you are constantly worried about admin and teachers in the hall questioning why you're anywhere but the classroom. On an individual level, the staff is very personable and nowhere near as critical.
