Really, really incredible. The only downside for me is the slightly lower-than-ideal racial and wealth diversity. Otherwise, this school has put me in a place I never could have imagined without it; I consider my teachers to be my friends, mentors, and sometimes even colleagues. I am applying to college right now, and I feel not only incredibly prepared, but excited! Julia, our college counselor, is the most incredible and helpful person you'll meet. This school may not be right for everyone, but please consider it. Without it I would be a much lesser person.

Northwest Academy is unparalleled. I considered other top-rated schools, but their students seemed to be running on rails, given only a pre fixe menu of opportunities. In contrast, NWA's sui generis curriculum and culture cultivates individuality, training the value of uniqueness in person and thought. Kids aren't conditioned to be a "kind" of person, either by classmates or institutionally.

NWA is often described as an arts school. I would argue that this is underfitting. The arts are amalgamated within academics, steeping a creative flavor of critical thinking into students as they grow. The artistic response assignments instill active learning, where kids are given the opportunity to analyze subjects through distinct lenses, but in a way completely their own. This is where "outside the box" thinking comes from: teaching with blank canvases. While other schools invest in framing students to look good on paper, NWA animates unscripted adults who write their own stories.
Amazing school! Northwest Academy transformed my sons’ lives. Because of the small class size and school, students develop close relationships with the faculty. The students enjoy the meaningful and creative work and learn to do their homework without parental nagging.

Northwest Academy graduates adults who are curious, articulate, and inclusive. The location means the students experience downtown Portland's vibrant cultural institutions. My sons are able to talk confidently with adults, navigate an urban environment, and solve problems independently.

You should check out the school if you are looking for an accepting environment that nurtures and supports achievement, risk-taking, hard work and questioning.
