Overrall, my experience at NHS was phenomenal. The teachers, for the most part, very clearly want you to succeed and take the time to help those who struggle. The amount of teachers with extra help programs is hard to numerous, and the school even runs other after school programs to help students in need of it. They WILL bend over backwards any way they can to help, and it shows. The school also always feels incredibly safe, and the administration faculty, APs, and principal work hard to ensure that the school provides a positive environment for its students. The music and art departments are outstanding, especially in comparison with other schools in the area, and our sports teams are also some of the best to be found on Long Island. The only lacking aspect of the school is its almost total lack of diversity, which is most likely due to the area and demographics that the school lies in. However, to my knowledge, no student has felt discriminated against in any way by the staff.
As far as things go, NHS is a good school. They prep us well, the racism/homo/transphobia are minimal, and the elective options are stunning! My two complaints are that drugs are rampant, and diversity is minimal.
Coming from the South Bronx to a small town on the north shore of Long Island was a big move. I came to this town into this high school not knowing anyone. When I got here it felt like a maze. It’s so big, there’s people willing to help you everywhere you go. You build relationships with the teachers and they’re always there when you need them. I’ve even made great relationships with teachers I never even got to have myself! Unfortunately, there isn’t much diversity compared to my school in the Bronx, but there is so much opportunity for you to excel. The electives, clubs and sports you can be apart of are out of this world. They give so many options for the students to find what they really want to do. My experience in this high school has been nothing but positive. It was definitely worth the move. The opportunities and experiences that I’ve gained are all thanks to this school!
