I’m a senior at Northern and this school is the epitome of a JOKE, the administration running NHS has no idea what they’re doing. They constantly blame students for setting a bad representation of Northern to the Durham community, but take no accountability for the actions that their students take. Nothing is done about anything here. Issues of bullying, racism, and other discriminatory attacks are ignored and pushed aside. Positive reinforcement does not exist at Northern. Instead, they patronize students of color by downplaying their competence and ability. Whenever a student of color achieves anything, the only recognition they’re given is a post on the Northern Facebook page. Their only concern is their image, not the well-being of students. School spirit is non-existent, teachers couldn’t care less, and the students are either micro-managed by their parents, or have no sense of direction.
It’s a typical high school experience, with a slight twist. It has a lot more violence than most high schools. Also the math teachers are definitely not the best. Most of the teachers are pretty nice though they are understanding. All the clubs here are really fun and have great teachers running them.
My experience at Northern High School has been extremely positive. The teachers are incredibly enthusiastic and are very knowledgeable of the subjects that they teach. Every teacher that I have encountered has made learning fun and supported me in my academic endeavors. However, Northern is in a very low-funded district. We do not have access to good resources and we have very limited technology. The building itself is very old and worn down. We do not offer very many clubs, but our athletics department is admired by many other schools. The majority of adolescents at the school seem to have no interest in learning, which can be very difficult for teachers and other students. This is not a problem with the school itself, more of the population that the school serves. I recommend Northern to students and families that are not afraid to take learning into their own hands and are willing to do a little bit of after school research on their own time.
