North Muskegon High School Reviews
Rating 4.07 out of 5 112 reviews
I've had a good experience with North Muskegon. The teacher-student relationships are good and trusting and it's easy to ask questions. The teachers and staff truly seem to care about the students. Being such a small school, everyone knows everyone, which can have both good and bad aspects. The classes are at a good level of challenging, and it's easy to stay motivated. The unity during school, at school events, and even in the community is a big part of North Muskegon. Everyone is always cheering each other on whether it's at a basketball game or at the school musical.
North Muskegon is a very small community, which is great if you're part of the in group and horrible if you're not. The community is very white, affluent, and many families have been there for generations. As a person of color and middle class student who moved there in 5th grade, I never felt like I belonged. Even though I was there until senior year, I felt like an outsider looking in. Of course there were some exceptions. The music program (especially the orchestra) is highly skilled, underfunded, and underappreciated. I really had a supportive home community there. I also appreciated the smaller class environments of advanced courses. That being said, the academic flexibility is pretty low. They can't really accommodate a schedule with advanced classes, and it's ridiculously difficult to take AP and fine arts at the same time. Overall, there are definitely some amazing people and classes at NM, but it can be pretty rough for newcomers
Overall, North Muskegon helped guide me into the person I am today. Whether that was through sports, academics, or the support the community showed when my younger brother was diagnosed with childhood Leukemia. This school has and will always hold a special place in my heart. It is my starting ground, and now, I grow from there. But, I will never be afraid to go back to my roots.
