NCSSM has been an incredibly enriching experience for my daughter. The classes are unique and rigorous. I expected great science and math courses, of which there are many, but there is also a robust humanities department with equally amazing classes. Many of the classes are topics you typically only see offered at colleges. The teachers challenge the students and share their passion for their area of expertise. Students have opportunities for research, mentorship with professionals, and study abroad trips. There are also many clubs and activities to keep the students engaged. The boarding school community allows the students to grow socially as well. My daughter finally found her people! The administration is supportive and there is a continuous focus on mental well being. NCSSM has nurtured my daughter and helped her become confident in being her authentic self. I am so thankful she accepted the greater challenge!
The adjustment was hard initially, but overall very worth it. The school has incredibly counselors and teachers, and all the support for new students was especially helpful for me. Even though this is a STEM school, the Humanities and Fine Arts departments are incredible and there are many opportunities for growth within them. Through the Research Experience in the Humanities program, my ability to analyze texts and write has significantly improved. There are a wide variety of extracurriculars available for everyone. The student run cultural fests and activities were some of the highlights of my year. A fair warning, the classes are harder than any I have ever taken before. One of the things I would like to see improved are better coordinated office hours. The chemistry department and precalc teachers hold office hours at the same times, so it can be challenging for a student enrolled in both to maximize the amount of time spent in office hours. Overall this school was very rewarding!
Our daughter was one of the very fortunate students offered a chance to live and learn at NCSSM last year. She is about to start her senior year, and is so excited to return to the Morganton campus in August. The thought and care that the faculty, administration and staff put into the establishment of the second physical campus was evident at every moment. The faculty at the school is absolutely first class and care deeply about each student’s success. The residential life program is the special sauce to build community and culture among the students. Communications with parents over the past year was outstanding as we were constantly kept in the loop and felt part of the team - crucial when sending our daughter away from home! The school clearly demonstrated a culture of resiliency and adaptability during Morganton’s inaugural year which rubbed off on the students.
