Norfolk Academy provided an extraordinary educational journey for my two children, fueling their curiosity and inspiring them to explore new avenues that they might not have discovered without the incredible teachers and coaches at this school. My oldest child, who came in sixth grade, now studies engineering at an Ivy League university; he particularly loved the robotics team, as well as soccer, swimming, and crew teams. My youngest child, who is a senior at NA, came in first grade, and she has developed a passion for medicine and health, largely through the school's Global Health Fellows program and the Medical Scholars program.

Norfolk Academy is an excellent preparatory school which offers students several wonderful resources for college-readiness as well as social and academic skills which will follow the students for the rest of their lives. The faculty is stronger than any other school I have visited, and always knows the students' needs, perhaps due to the smaller class size. The writing program is excellent as well and prepares students above and beyond for college life. The sports program is excellent, and almost every student is heavily involved in some form of after-school activity, whether it be music, sports, or theater. Overall, the school is worth the extra money, and is a wonderflu enirornment for students to thrive and enjoy thier childhood.
As a female African American student, the social atmosphere was not as welcoming as it could have been. The lack of diversity in the faculty and in the student body is very noticeable; for a long time the only black men that young boys could have looked up to on campus were the dance teacher and the majority of the cleaning staff. I spent a lot of my time advocating for changes in our representation in the classroom, in our faculty, and in our student body. I wrote a letter about these issues that made its way to the board of trustees, and even met with our headmaster on multiple occasions to propose new ideas that will allow the next generation of black students feel more apart of the campus and its social and academic atmosphere. Going to this school taught me many things about myself, including the importance of setting aside my "high school experience" in order to attend such a stellar academic school, and the importance of using my voice to inspire change in my environment.
