Newton High School is a nice blend of how the real world is while keeping a safe environment. Newton is a largely diverse town, but the school is mostly white. We have the highest number of Foreign Exchange Students in the state, which helps them see the western world of America, but also helps us learn and respect their culture. Things happen in NHS and that is undeniable but it isn't some false sense of security that is going to leave you stranded in the real world, or in college where things aren't always safe and proper. Newton High has provided me with a huge sense of reality that is very underappreciated by others that attend. I do recommend anyone in the area that asks if they should try the private school option, to send their kids to Newton High and share some of my experiences with them.
Newton Senior High School has great programs for welding, athletics, FFA, and woodworking. Though if you are not interested in those things then it's like any other school. It has troubles with teen smoking and drug use and some other big issues. The school praises its sports team but doesn't focus much attention on any of its visual or performing arts programs. The art hallway tends to get termites so the walls are damaged, whereas the rest of the school halls are pretty pristine. It has three other buildings, auto, engineering and welding, and FFA and woods. Newton High School is an average school, it has some benefits and some downsides but overall you'll get an average education, and it's fairly easy to get an A in your classes.
While my opinion may be different than many others who attended Newton High, I have had a great experience. The vast majority of teachers and staff I have had to interact with have gone above and beyond to ensure the success of their students. It can have a bad reputation at times, but I truly believe that if people would be willing to look past the negative aspects, they could see so much good. The extracurriculars are run well and the coaches and activity leaders care greatly about their athletes.
