Newport High School is undeniably a competitive environment and students may feel pressured to take rigorous classes to just simply "fit in". But we're slowly moving away from that. One thing I love about Newport is the community. You can practically get help with anything and there is a designated staff for whatever you need help with. I can tell the teachers really care about the students than their grades. The teachers are trying to make their students the best students they can, but also remind the students that grades are not everything and that a bad grade is not the end of the world. Newport gets too lost in academic competitiveness at times and it's all driven by the students. The teachers like healthy competition, but they're the ones who bring the students back down to Earth and reality.

I was class of '15, and I loved my experience. Student body was caring, and teachers were even more so. I struggled academically, and wasn't on track to graduate my senior year. However I met with my counselor and she set a meeting with several of my teachers that all gave me so much support, it absolutely warmed my heart. My counselor set up a study hall for me (which is not a registered class) in which every other day I'd have an extra period to work on my studies and when I actually connected with my teachers and worked with them, all of my grades dramatically increased. I owe a lot to them. I give them an "Excellent" rating without even noting how accepted I felt by student body (especially as an openly queer student.) Say what you want about Newport, it's too academically stressful, cliquey, there's new management, etc... I get it. Not everyone's experience is amazing. The thing is, high school is what sucks. Newport does an amazing job of making it suck much less.
It's true that Newport is academically rigorous with the majority of the student body being highly competitive. Most students crumble under the pressure if they don't keep up with the norm of the student body which consists of taking multiple AP's and scoring very high on tests. During my time here, I've noticed it's really one way or the other. Regardless, the students there know how to balance school and social life. Work hard, party harder, Newport students do it well.
