I was class of '15, and I loved my experience. Student body was caring, and teachers were even more so. I struggled academically, and wasn't on track to graduate my senior year. However I met with my counselor and she set a meeting with several of my teachers that all gave me so much support, it absolutely warmed my heart. My counselor set up a study hall for me (which is not a registered class) in which every other day I'd have an extra period to work on my studies and when I actually connected with my teachers and worked with them, all of my grades dramatically increased. I owe a lot to them. I give them an "Excellent" rating without even noting how accepted I felt by student body (especially as an openly queer student.) Say what you want about Newport, it's too academically stressful, cliquey, there's new management, etc... I get it. Not everyone's experience is amazing. The thing is, high school is what sucks. Newport does an amazing job of making it suck much less.
Review Newport Senior High School
Newport High School has a very academically driven student population. Most students will take at least three to five advanced placement classes during their four years of high school. In my own experience as well as many of my close friends, four AP classes each school year is normal. While the student tests scores are some of the top ranked in the state, the majority of our sports teams do not preform very well. There is not a big focus on athletics and students are often crammed with so many advanced classes that it leaves little time for sports. At Newport, there is a wide variety of clubs and activities you can participate in during school and after school. Link Crew is a very popular club that pairs incoming freshmen with upperclassmen to help their transition to high school.
Social climate of Newport High School generally very negative. Competitiveness is the norm, and social groups are extremely cliqued off. Teachers are hit and miss, some are great and some aren't. The nice thing is that since there is such a pressure to be in a "group" or to find a niche, there are a lot of different options, and things like theater and band and computer science club that would traditionally be seen as nerdy and uncool are now socially acceptable. The only way this school is getting 3 stars from me is because of my orchestra program. It is nationally renowned, and I am extremely grateful to have experienced it. I wouldn't have at any other point in my life through any other school.
