When your child first get admitted you feel elated with the hope that now your child will be thriving in an academically nurturing environment.
While that may be the case for some, others get dismissed and ignored. I'm sad to say that over the years we've had mostly negative experiences with the school. I have a child who is straightforward learner and I have a child who is not. This school is not at all for the latter. There are a few good teachers here, some very nice, but the majority have no accountability or communication skills.
This school expects academic excellence, the same should be expected from the teachers. How else will it work? Students in high school are ok, the middle school students are mostly brats/bullies. There was one loud, arrogant kid who seemed to be the only one called upon in the zoom classes. Overall this school doesn't offer a healthy learning environment. The custodian staff and a few of the front desk staff are great!

As I prepare for the upcoming school year and reflect on my sophomore year experiences, my heart can't help but feel overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. After completing my first year of high school in Honduras, thoughts regarding how welcoming the new environment I would encounter clouded my mind. As a first-generation student entering a traditional US high school, my hopes were that teachers and staff would aim to support me despite obvious academic differences between me and my classmates, the students whom I had difficulty connecting with at first. Nonetheless, my original expectations were completely surpassed once I began having meaningful interactions with the teachers and staff. Not only did they help me realize having a different background is an advantage when it comes to acquiring a unique perspective, but they also helped me embrace and show pride in it. New west has encouraged me to build a strong and empowering character, one where my differences stand out proudly.
My experience at New West Charter High school has been a really good one. I've been in New West since 6th grade but since then, the school has expanded and took in many things. I like how this school has dance as an option to replace PE credit. I also like all of the teachers and staff members; they are all super uplifted and eager to help the students. But I do feel like they could have done a little bit more of a good job in terms of academics because there is no AP courses offered in New West. Although we are able to raise the GPA by taking honors courses, it still would have helped if there were AP offered. But you are definitely able to take SMC AP classes to replace that gap. Overall, I've met many of my great friends in New West and I had a really fun time. Go Eagles!!
