If it wasn't for the administration and some of the student culture, I would probably have given this school four stars. I was a student in the theatre department and my art teachers were really incredible, and they really do care about their students. The administration, on the other hand (Eric Crites in particular) seems to only care about the image of the school and not the students at all. The majority of students leave this school with some type of addiction or drug dependency, including weed, cocaine, prescription drugs, and so so much nicotine. It's everywhere and everyone knows it. Kids would do coke in the bathroom, hide vodka in their water bottles, and have edibles in the middle of class. Eric knows there is a huge problem with student mental health and while the counselor does everything in her power to help (she's really awesome), Eric simple sweeps it under the rug so as not to bring attention to the problem. The school has potential but bureaucracy is ruining it.

At New Mexico School for the Arts, I pursued a rigorous visual arts training that I loved. However, more than anything, New Mexico School for the Arts taught me how to be diligent, responsible, organized, detail-oriented, creative, and passionate. The instructors and courses no matter the field were always aimed at combining my creative and technical skills, as well as teaching me the skills of creating a successful project.
I like going to NMSA because it has built me and other people a home to be ourselves and explore what we want to endulge our dreams and goals into. At NMSA we have 5 departments which we all had to audition to get into. These departments include Music (Instrumentals and Vocals), Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre and Creative Writing. I have been at NMSA for about 2 years now and it has changed my life for the better. I am a music student but i specialize in Vocals. I have auditioned to get into the Visual Arts Department and i did get in. Each kid at NMSA gets about 2000 to 2500 hours a school year of Arts classes. These classes about 2 hours and 45 minutes long, along with about 4 hours and 30 minutes of academic classes. At the end of the year all of the departments come together and host a show called ArtSpring and even though i have only been apart of one ArtSpring it still shaped the way i used to think of being a performer/artist.
