We have been very happy with NMIS. We've had excellent teachers and our child really enjoys school. The language immersion and IB programs are wonderful. I think the IB projects are great learning experiences. I also really appreciate the art and music classes. The past year has been rough with covid and online learning, but NMIS teachers and staff have worked so hard to make the best of the circumstances. We are so happy to be back to full time in-person school now!
We feel as though we won the lottery with NMIS. Our children receive an incredible IB bilingual education (and start Arabic in upper grades), technology in the computer lab, Suzuki violin lessons twice a week, art twice a week, PE( in the form of aikedo, yoga, cardio, dancing, and much more), and awesome after school programs. The administration works so hard for the students, and strives to connect with each and every one at a personal level. The community of families is strong, supportive, and committed to making the school better every day. I cannot say enough about the teachers at NMIS. They care deeply for their students, use best practices in education in the classroom, and go far beyond what is required of them to ensure they give their students the best education possible. We enthusiastically recommend NMIS!
The best aspect of this school for us is the Spanish immersion. Our children are understanding Spanish very well and learning to speak well. We also appreciate the high parental involvement; there are many families who put in countless hours/funds to help the school improve. If you're considering this school, expect to be regularly asked for help by volunteering and there's an annual fund-raiser. We've enjoyed taking an active role in our children's school.
One challenge for the school is hiring teachers who are skilled in multiple arenas due to the immersion and IB facets. So (like every school) some teachers are better than others (some are truly exceptional), and there should probably be a bit more focus on effective classroom behavior management.
And like most charter schools it doesn't have the resources of a regular public school like a PE teacher and counselor. We love that the kids have music and art twice a week and other enrichment classes like coding, aikido, and yoga.
