Montera is a pretty average middle school. While there are pluses, there are a few cons, but none are too major. The girls basketball team got the boys team hand-me-downs, and lots of teachers have left. The workload is pretty light, almost too light, considering we only had homework in a few classes on special occasions, leaving the students behind in high school. On the plus side, Montera has a woodshop course that not many middle schools offer, and the teacher is phenomenal. The library is awesome, and lots of the teachers really have a passion for teaching. The campus is large, and typically pretty clean. The food could be better, but its free, so everyone can get it. There are many field trips that you can go on, such as the 6th grade camping trip, museum trips, and the 8th grade DC trip. Overall, I would recommend Montera!
I was an eighth grade student at Montera Middle School, class of 2017. Montera is a diverse school, with kids from all parts of Oakland and of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds etc. I learned valuable life lessons from this and have experienced a school experience similar to real life. I had great teachers who care and empower their students. Last year, I took advanced Spanish and 9th-grade level math. Montera provides a girl's and boy's basketball, girl's volleyball, track and field, baseball, girl's golf, girls and boy's soccer and more. Not into sports? Montera has after school clubs such as Debate, Gardening, Techbridge (for girls only) and a student council. Under the leadership of Principal Avent, Montera is becoming an IB school and just introduced block periods. The negative reputation Montera has is fueled by outdated information and from parents who refuse to give Montera chance. Montera has a lot to offer and is by far one of the best middle schools in Oakland.
This school was a great experience for me. My teachers cared about me and my success, they pushed me to do my best while also staying back and helping those who needed more help. I was surrounded by people who came from all sorts of backgrounds and neighborhoods and it was so great to see that. Montera made me fall in love with math and science due to my amazing science teacher in sixth grade. In all my three years, I never had a teacher I didn't like. Despite, the bad reputation, Montera is a great school.
