Ever since covid has started, perhaps, the first thing on my mind was starting high school. And, now that I am in high school, I do have to mention that it is quite weird without being there in person, or having people around you while you dash to your lockers in between periods. However, covid has definitely eased my way into 9th grade, with the teachers being so supportive and hard-working. If you are a student, you probably have either felt really bad and guilty as the teacher pleads (for the 100th time) to unmute and speak up or when breakouts are so awkward and can really relate to the uneasiness in the beginning of the school year. But, hats off to the teachers! They are so dedicated and helpful. School during covid is definitely not easy, but my respect has grown remarkably for the teachers who make it happen every day!
Also, shoutout to all the leadership students, who keep us entertained and energetic throughout the day with fun concepts, events, and fundraisers!

In the two years spent at Mission San Jose High School, I have learned a lot about its culture. My high school is mostly known for being academically successful, but at what cost? The students at the school push themselves to be the best they can and achieve the popular "straight As and 4.0 GPA" proverb. While there is nothing wrong with doing your best at school, the constant, overly competitive attitude can be toxic to an adolescent. Plenty of classmates I know have struggled with their mental health before reaching 11th grade, which is infamous for being known as the hardest year in a student's high school career. Students are expected to deal with their mental health. Apart from academics, our school has no football team. As a freshman, I was disappointed I would be missing out on token high school moments. Nevertheless, I am still a proud student at this amazing school and have the utmost respect for all fantastic staff members. Go Warriors!
MSJ may seem like a good school on the outside but that is because the students really work their butts off to meet their parent's standards. There is a really unhealthy obsession with grades and "getting that A" type of mentality. Most teachers are not that good, and due to the low pay they receive, are pretty agitated. Freshman are now self-studying for AP exams even if they have not took a single AP class just so they can look "competitive" to the UC system. Students often sleep no more than 6 hours a night usually becuase teachers assign a lot of homework paired with many students' general laziness. Some students also develop mental issues such as depression. Would not recommend to anyone trying to have a normal high school experience. If you like to challenge yourself and don't clown around, but also know your limits, welcome aboard the Caffeine train. Next stop, Depression Dunes!
