MAA is the charter school for Milwaukie High School, and don’t be fooled, you can still take classes at Milwaukie (in fact you will have to for many classes). I’m currently heading into my sophomore year and think the connections between MAA and MHS students are lovely and they clash well, with MAA core classes being MAA only and things like health and PE being mixed. Arts lab, an exploration into college level skills, is the only MAA exclusive class. There’s a great diversity of LGBT+ students, though I struggled because a lot of friend groups are closed off at the beginning. The theater program is fantastic and I highly recommend participating!
Great school for those looking for an academic challenge. If you plan to take a history class here, expect an instructor who is unsympathetic and cold. Might be biased but I know I'm not the only one who has said similar. Generally the moral and relationships among instructors seems disconnected and cliquey, really sets the tone for the school but I'm sure things have changed.
MAA is an excellent choice for any high-schooler looking for an open-minded, creative community of students to surround themselves with. The academics are less arts-focused than they could be, but with many new teachers this year I am hopeful for the prospects of the program. The charter school in itself is bound together by similar interests and a sense of shared identity that Milwaukie High School doesn't have, however this can be a setback when fostering inter-school spirit between the two.
