Millard West High School Reviews
Rating 3.99 out of 5 465 reviews
Though I only got the chance to go here for a year and a half, I wouldn't have wanted to graduate from anywhere else. Millard West has the best administrative team on Earth! I have been to four different school districts throughout k-12 and I have never felt more important/cared about by my higher-ups. During my time at Millard West, I was able to regain confidence and become more involved in the things I love. As someone who struggles with mental illness, I also felt a great amount of support when things got tough. I will forever admire Millard West for what it has taught me.
I, for the most part have had a fulfilling, enjoyable, and exciting experience at Millard West High School. The wide range of classes allows me to explore what I may want to do in the future. I have had many teachers that truly care about my success and help me reach my goals. I have the opportunity to participate in activities and sports with my friends. The one criticism that frustrates me is that I feel that the varsity competition cheer team doesn’t get the recognition and appreciation the team deserves. At Millard West, cheer is considered an “activity”, despite having to pay the “sports” fee. As a part of this insanely hard-working team, it’s difficult to not be acknowledged as a true “sport” when we have won 12 national titles and 27 state titles while representing this school. All I wish for is a little more appreciation for the hours of hard work, determination, blood, sweat, and tears we put into this sport.
As a recent 2023 graduate, my experiences with Millard West are very recent. High school is full of ups and downs, but I feel that MW did a fantastic job of giving students resources to help navigate these. As with any school, there are amazing and less-than-ideal teachers. MW has many more amazing teachers than the latter. By amazing, I mean these teachers are people that get to know their students. Really get to know them. These teachers understand that life happens and therefore will allow an extra day to finish an assignment, but also know when to stick to their rules. It’s a hard balance to make, but many of the teachers at MW excel at it.
MW isn’t perfect, though. There were many times that I felt the teachers handed out too much homework. Freshman year I had an average of 6 hours of dedicated homework time a night. That’s obnoxious. AP class or not, Honors class or not, research shows that homework is useful for the first 30 minutes per subject. After that it’s near pointless.
