I have attended Middletown High School for all four years of my high school experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at MHS, but I am also prepared to leave. I believe administration can do a better job of working with and handling students with behavioral issues, and I can speak from experience. I have seen students with behavioral or mental issues cast aside or disregarded on multiple occasions by security and admin. If a student is in need they should be receiving help from a counselor or ESS advisor, not a security guard who is unaware of how to handle the situation. I also think that there should be equal treatment of all sports, as football and basketball are very obviously favored by the athletics department.
In my experience, MHS teachers care about their students and want to see them succeed. Unfortunately, this is not true for all of the teachers and many of my friends have had teachers who were uninterested, unhelpful, or demonstrated clear favoritism. I never ate the school lunch, but I did walk through the lunch line with my friends and observe clear health violations that made me feel uneasy about the food, which is poor-quality to begin with. What bothered me most about MHS was that the administration wanted nothing to do with helping the kids. They withheld information, made false statements and promises, and went back on their word many times. As an AP student with a mental illness, I felt I was given respect by the administration based on my academic status. Some of my friends who also struggled with mental illness were treated with disdain for struggling with schoolwork due to their illness. Everyone at MHS knows that when admins say they support ALL students, they are lying.
Middletown High School is a great place to learn and grow. I have mostly enjoyed the technology classes. I have also gotten involved in a number of sports and extracurricular activities. The music program is excellent! I play percussion and enjoy performing in the multitude of productions. I am involved in Morning News and have been involved sports all four years of my high school career. I have met some great friends and have good relationships with my teachers!
