I’ve been at Mickey Leland for a while, and found it rather mediocre. In honesty, from personal experience, it is no different from your average Middle School/High School. The conditions of the building and academics are what really make the school great, however the Schedule system along with students are a mess. When I first had my schedule it came back with 9 periods and took almost 3 weeks for it to be fixed after constant complaints. I’d also like to add to the rather odd uniforms. It prepares students for work atmospheres, I feel for middle school it is a bit much and gives little to no freedom, with the day of freedom, I.E: Spirit Day, you have to wear a Mickey Leland designed shirt, or college shirt, along with blue jeans. All I’m saying to the people that expect a high level education, you will get it, however, if you expect everything to be of decent quality, you will be rather disappointed.
The best thing about Mickey Leland would be the teachers and opportunities. The teachers dedicate themselves to the students and do what they can to insure that their material is understood for every student, while preparing you for college. The opportunities at Mickey Leland help prepare students for the next step and let them decide on their future.
What I've liked about Mickey Leland has been their extremely involved, and helpful staff. They all truly care about seeing the students succeed. I would not really change anything.
