My experience at Miami Lakes Tech was definitely different from that of a normal public school. At this school, we separated by academy and strands which helped you to bond easily with people of your own trade. Although separated, we still come together and you would have friends from other academies and other trades. The education was mediocre. Being at such an "exceptional magnet school", you are expected to "keep up" and understand concepts on the spot. Teachers and administration do the bare minimum and children are treated more so as adults that are supposed to figure things out for themselves. It more so replicates a college/university setting, so only mature and independent students will thrive here. Also, there isn't any sports, events, or fun really. Go to school, do your work, and make the honor roll is the goal here, nothing more or nothing less. Administrators thrive off of awards and national acknowledgements, so if you are bringing down class averages, you're out!
If you enroll under the Health Academy, you could get NAF certified and CPR certified. Did I finish all requirements necessary to earn these certifications? Yes. Did any of us get certified? No. Some say it was our teacher’s fault, I believe the school/ administration should have at least checked if our teacher was actually doing what she needed to do to earn what we worked hard for! I will never forget being so happy that I got accepted to NHS and attending a ceremony as part of being a member. I tutored, paid my dues, and even purchased a shirt yet when graduation came, I was not listed as a member. My mom emailed the sponsor. She just ignored my mom. Hopefully, administration will ensure that all the recognition or certifications will be received. Other than that, I had amazing teachers who changed me as a person. Most treat their students like family. If you want an outstanding college resume, this school is great for you. They know how to make their students look good.
My first two years at MLEC were amazing! I felt welcomed in such diverse community and I was able to pursue my career at a young age. However, my Junior and Senior year were nothing but a pure disappointment. The change in administration led to the depletion of several programs within the magnet institution all being of Communication and Art fields. If you plan on applying to the Academy Cambridge or Information Technology, expect great opportunities and plenty of funding; if you are interested in any of the other offered programs, expect either terrible instructors, discrimination, or the complete elimination of your field all together. MLEC's academics are elevated outside of the career pathways, but in my personal opinion, a slightly above average learning environment isn't worth risking your safety as I was questioned by law enforcement three times throughout my four years there for incidents I witnessed and had to keep secret.
