My experience here was interesting. The treatment of POC here was awful, and the administration DID NOT CARE about student feedback. The kids don't get educated about racism and socioeconomic status. My best friend was one of the two POC in our grade, and I have heard it all. She was so poorly treated at this school, even though her entire family had gone here, and they had been a considerable contribution to the school and its "community." A white student once told her that she couldn't afford an iPhone X because she was poor. A different white student also told her that she wouldn't get into a good college because she was black. She told a teacher, and the kids were pulled aside and talked to. That's it. No higher administration or parents were involved. Maybe it's different now as they have a new principal who is a POC. However, many of the students and other teachers are racist. It's never acknowledged because many of the kids who go here and teachers who work here are white.
Wonderful, nurturing school, with a rigorous and purposeful academic curriculum. School's mission and values place strong emphasis on compassion, kindness, diversity, inclusion, and respect. We love that the school focuses on developing social and emotional intelligence as much as early literacy and number sense in early primary years. Warm and welcoming community of families. New head of school (Racheal Adriko) is excellent.
My time at MMS was very mixed. Some parts I enjoyed and some parts have scarred me for life and has caused unexplainable trauma when it comes to my racial identity. One tip I would give to any BIPOC families applying to this school is find people that will support you and your child with anything. Also, some of the teachers there can be great support systems.
