Mentor High School Reviews
Rating 4 out of 5 400 reviews
Mentor High School is one of the largest high schools in Ohio, meaning there are advantages and disadvantages. Like every high school, change is definitely needed. For instance, safety training and practice drills need improvement in the event of an actual emergency. Staff -including substitutes- need to know exactly what to do to keep them and their students out of harm. In an accidental drill last year, some teachers, staff, and students made poor decisions that would've put their lives and others in danger if it were a real threat. That being said, most knew what to generally due in that type of situation, but more training is definitely needed. Besides the large risk of school threats due to the size and population of the school, the education system, class selection, and extracurricular activities are above any other school I've went to.
Overall, I've had a decent experience at Mentor High School. There are an abundance of different classes you could take, including CCP, CTE, and AP courses. I would suggest an expansion of the foreign language curriculum, because I feel like we take a long time to cover lessons that shouldn't take too much time (in honors level classes), which can hinder how much of the language we're actually learning. The teachers I've encountered at this school really seem to care about helping their students succeed and I think some of them foster a safe and inclusive environment. However, I definitely think that the students here aren't always the kindest and I've heard mixed stories about how well the school handles situations of bullying. In my experience, the staff and principal are easy to work with. I do appreciate all the technology we have access to, such as macbooks and apple tvs in our classrooms. There are also an incredible amount of sports and clubs that students can participate in.
Some teachers at Mentor are incredible. They're compassionate, and they take time to work with you to ensure you understand the material. As someone who takes a little bit to understand certain concepts, it benefited me to have teachers who helped me outside of class. The music and arts programs at Mentor are incredible. At the same time, Mentor High School's administration is lacking. They rarely listen to the student's thoughts about necessary change, but they pretend they don't. They have a "Principal's Advisory" group meant to advise the principal on changes that need to be made, but in 4 years, I've only seen 1 thing changed. They keep teachers hired even though they spread racist and homophobic hate speech. There's teachers who refuse to reflect on their own abilities and figure out new avenues to teach their students. They're impossible to work with, and even if you tell a guidance counselor about the behavior, no change is made.
