Memorial as a whole offers a variety of different opportunities for each individual student. The school offers many different classes of varying levels of difficulty including: honors classes, AP classes, and classes focused on college preparation. Along with the wide range of classes, the school also has many different extracurricular activities as well like sports and clubs. Even though there are many things to do there, the school building itself is not a great environment for students. There is an assortment of issues with the building itself, such as the heating and cooling systems being irregular, the ceilings falling apart, and overall being very dirty. Overall I think it is a great place to come if you are interested in certain high-level classes, however; the positives of the school are often overshadowed by the negatives.

This school is definitely a passable place to accomplish my credits and be able to continue my education beyond middle school, but it's got a long way to go before being able to consistently churn out college or career-ready students year after year. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities for growth I was able to seize throughout my time in that school, and some of my teachers made a lifelong impression that definitely contributed in inspiring me to become a teacher one day. However, any passionate student can tell when they are due for some changes in their education. James Madison Memorial, in particular, is long overdue for some practical, safety hazard, or sanitary updates. Our school's infrastructure is outdated and does little to inspire innovation or motivate students, and the hierarchical system of staff do nothing to make the lives of students better or improve the average education of the class body.
Memorial high shares most traits with other public high schools in urban areas; diverse student body and faculty, underfunded extra curricular activities and art departments, and overly generous to all things sports. However, Memorial strays from this archetype in a few remarkable ways. The culture at this school values inclusivity and respect. The sense of community and fidelity between students and staff is very strong. The mantra "we take care of our own" embodies this school. While music, theatre and the arts are stereotypically underfunded, the administration makes great effort to demonstrate support for all activities and productions hosted by these departments even if money lacks. Some of the best teachers I've ever had taught or teach at Madison Memorial. Educators here are dedicated and knowledgeable. Most engage heavily in extra curriculars outside of school and form lasting relationships with their students.
