McLean is academically challenging and full of passionate, dedicated staff members who positively impact their students greatly. I learned an immeasurable amount in my four years there and met some of the best people I know. That said, because McLean is so high achieving there is an intense and unreasonable amount of pressure placed on students and an unforgiving academic culture that can teach students to equate their grades to their self-worth. Also, the administration tends to give more money to sports (many of which are consistently unsuccessful) while other activities (debate, performing arts, etc.) are far more successful, yet far less funded.

My problems with McLean stem from my inability to divorce my experiences as a student from my experiences as a person. The teachers, with a few key exceptions are phenomenal. They’re patient, and classes aren’t a struggle while I was in them. If I fall behind it isn’t because of my apathy, because I care about the classes, which seems almost miraculous when I hear about my friends’ struggles with monotony in neighboring schools. There’s just something about the environment that is so hostile and majorly uncomfortable. No one seems to care about much of anything. Positive people became saturated in layers of cynicism. It’s an outstanding institution, and I know that I’m lucky to have ever attended. My experience is average. I’m an average person who hates high school for the same reasons everyone else does. McLean is no different from any other high school, in that it’s great for students, and miserable for everyone else.
I had a great experience at McLean. McLean offers many electives that deal with career options, such as computer science, AP computer science, Accounting, STEM, cyber courses, culinary courses, photography courses, art courses, ceramics, and many more. This wide range of electives allows student to try new things in order to find out their interests, thus being more prepared for college. Additionally, the academics are rigorous at McLean, challenging the students. Teachers at McLean are very helpful, especially if you need extra time to learn. There are many clubs that also coordinate to career paths as well as many volunteer clubs. McLean's school spirit is outstanding as we have many spirit days and spirit weeks that almost everybody participates in.
