Overcrowded student body, and renovation ready campus which can not serve all students and staff comfortably. Air ventilation, temperature control needs work - many spaces and classes are around 90 degrees in warm weather where occupants are dripping sweat. Good band program and competitive academics and sports. School administration could implement even more advanced planning and communication. Would like to see more student emotional and college readiness support. Build and lift moral and school spirit. Test performance is about 25% behind nearby rival school - this needs to change! School ranking is falling whereas it used to be neck in neck.
Offers a wide variety of opportunities for a diverse student body with exceptional academics, arts, and clubs & activities, where many students are able to go above and beyond pursuing their passions. While there are plenty of resources-for example, students have their first 6 AP tests financially covered by the school-the facilities need renovations and the cafeteria should provide healthier and more wholesome options (then again it's cafeteria food). Though the school fosters excellence, the competition can become less healthy and more toxic, and the predominantly rigorous, college-oriented environment can become stressful. I make sure to maintain my mental health, but I am thankful for the flexible array of academic opportunities offered by McLean's course offerings. The student-counselor relationship is relatively close here compared to other schools and getting the classes/schedule modifications you want is not difficult. There're also tons of school spirit and awesome people!
McLean High School was a very good experience. For the most part, the academics and the teachers are very engaging and interesting. The students are from all over the world because the location is so close to the capital, and the teachers are also pretty diverse! The school is incredibly welcoming and accepting of everyone, especially the LGBTQIA+ community and has built a really nice environment. It definitely has a very heavy workload though, and it expects a lot from the students to be engaging with the community, which not everybody wants to. One major thing that needs improvement is the campus/facility itself.
