McKinley is an exceptional middle school in need of resources from SLPS and a different start time. The school building is a beautiful landmark in the area and the school community is active and diverse. 9/10 teachers are incredibly talented educators but they need a stable school administration that incentivizes them to stay long term. Appropriate gifted education certifications, basic instructional technology and enrichment resources are lacking, as well as funds for basic building maintenance (especially in the bathroom area).

The school is tremendously under funded which affects the school environment. For the most part the teachers are easy to bond with although there will be such a huge change in staff this year. The lack of school spirit has carried on throughout the years although at certain times there's a peak. The students also like the feeling of being appreciated which is nonexistent a lot of the time at McKinley. When the faculty finally notices that appreciation ALONG with discipline serve as incentive for students to perform better academically and behavioral wise this will definitely be a better place. McKinley has recently started working listening to the student's input a bit more and assessing needs. There is still improvement to be made when it comes to building a wider variety of extracurricular activities and perfecting the ones already in place. This school is definitely a work in progress however I believe in the things that it can do. McKinley has the potential to be great.
McKinley is a very unique educational environment. It is not a traditional high school, being as there is a middle school in the same building. The high school has a fairly small population, but that makes the experience more personal. They have an exceptional, award- winning fine arts department, and is well- known for the band program. Overall, McKinley is a tight- knit, well administrated school, and I am extremely fortunate to have attended.
