McCallie offered me every opportunity. From playing competitive chess, swimming on the fifth best team in the country, studying English with Captain Lewis Russell Tate, and taking an amazing world religions course to kayaking and climbing Sunset rocks with Houston Patterson and Ed Lewis. My calculus class (the top math students, a very driven group, but always helping each other learn that tough material) went to whatever university they chose. When I arrived at my university, I had 1.5 years of credits across a variety of subjects and was able to explore wide fields of study rather than worrying about prerequisites or graduation requirements.

I blew my math AP exam (too many straight days of exams) and had to take college calculus before physics. The college course used the same text, but less difficult problems were assigned.

The only downside is lack of diversity. especially along class lines. Alumni events are like a republican party convention.

I used to be a proud McCallie student, but this school has really fallen apart these past few years. If you're not an amazing athlete or incredibly smart, well, good luck being happy here. There's three types of people at McCallie: the goody two shoeses trying to do as many things as they can so they can put it all on their college applications, the athletes who get all the glory and can do whatever the hell they want, and the rest of us who don't fit into the previous categories. These are the ones that end up aimlessly floating around the surface of the shiny toilet bowl that is this school. Oh yeah, and "Honor Truth Duty" is no longer a set of sincerely held values. It's a marketing gimmick. At least the teachers are awesome- that adds a star or two. Though I'm pretty sure most of them will be leaving soon.
I currently have two boys attending McCallie in the upper School for a combined 9 years of experience there. Both of my sons are on an advanced Honors track(there are about 3 tracks) and we feel there is definitely a greater emphasis on the athletes than academics. Funding is regularly cut for Model Un, Debate, and other more "academic" activities while the athletics department continues to add more incredible facilities, recruits, and travel experiences. That said, McCallie does have the highest ACT scores and AP courses completed in the area so it is by far the only choice.
