My experience at the Math and Science Academy has been a journey that has allowed me to learn a lot. The best part of my experience is the teachers, students, and advisors. The teachers take the time to make sure that the students have a good understanding of the material and are always available for help. The community is very diverse and allowed me to meet people who have the same background as me. The clubs offered here allowed me to build a better relationship with my community and gain soft skills that I can use in the future. The worst part of my experience was the amount of coursework we got because I came here during freshman year so I wasn't used to the large amount of coursework. Something I would like to see change is the size of the classrooms because there isn't enough room for all the students. I would also want the clubs and sports to be better supported because some of them don't have any buses, so many of us have to rely on parents or others to participate.
It’s a small school, which means you really get to know everyone and all the teachers get to know you. Since it’s a 6-12 school, the kids grew up together and are, as a result, very tight-knit. Regardless, they’re not very social either outside of their groups and are mostly academically-focused. This also means that there’s not very much drama and is usually peaceful. Since it’s a small school, the AP classes offered are limited, so most kids opt to do PSEO, or dual enrollment, during their junior and senior years as a result. Even so, the AP classes are taught well and teachers are understanding.
The education expectation level here is a bit more advanced than most schools and there are many ways to challenge yourself. One thing about MSA is that you take charge of your own education. You barely get the resources you need to get ready for the future. MSA basically throws you on a deserted island and tells you to survive. The rest is up to the student. The MSA administration now (2021-2023), does not take into consideration of the thoughts and concerns that the students and staff have. A lot of the best teacher have moved or quit due to the poor communication. Some of the teachers don't even have prep hours.
Overall MSA is only good for its education.
