During our search for a high school for my daughter we were torn between NDP and MVP. NDP definitely has more bang for your buck, but during welcome night MVP presented a very good student panel. At that time, we were convinced that it was the right fit for our daughter. Well, the school is really not what they have presented themselves to be. The students are very cliquish and the parents as well. It seems that administration listens to families that have money. Administration knows who they are and they put preference to those students. They do have a pretty good athletic programs, but the coaches have their favorites. It doesn't matter if a student has more abilities in the sport than the other athlete, the coach will pick who they like. As for extracurricular activities, the teacher moderators are not committed. Very little are committed. The administration does not support the clubs either, it is very difficult to get funding for clubs.

Maryvale will never be the school it promises in their admissions events. Maryvale has a great potential to be a school that lives up to its publicized values. At the end of freshman year the administration decides which students will be their best shot at getting into an elite college and then leave everyone else to fend for themselves. The college counselor is the only administration member that is actually willing to help the students with their schedules and does not try to dissuade students from taking certain classes. The system in which students are placed in class levels is extremely subjective and caters to the students whose parents complain to the administration the most. Earning your own spot in a class is incredibly difficult, and is only possible if the teacher likes you. There is an obvious split between the girls who are in upper levels of courses and girls who are not.
The atmosphere of Maryvale is warm and welcoming, while I regret my decision to attend that school. As a Maryvale graduate and recent college student, I have seen and heard of myself and so many others having difficulty in college courses. A college "preparatory" school, yet they offer little AP classes. I was put at a deficit going to college from my Maryvale education. The overall vigor of the school may shelter girls for their middle and highschool years, but prepare them for a rude awakening later in life.
