There have been several negative notices that overall effect how people see the school as a whole, and most of these rumors and/or situations are true. The students I've been around personally are mainly focused on succeeding in life, and the teachers are interested in giving students a genuinely good education as far as I'm concerned. Also, the performing arts students such as the choir, band, theater, tech and art kids; are all extremely talented! One thing I disliked at the school is that they would have rally's throughout the year that only focused on praising the athletic and academic students rather than those of the arts, who by the way, are usually ignored on campus, even though they are some of the few programs at King that genuinely work hard and actually succeed. With that being said, I think Martin Luther King Junior High School is great along the lines of education! But, there are many social issues that I definitely think need to be fixed sooner than later.
King HS is NOT a diverse place especially for black kids. They do need to work on creating a diverse & welcoming school environment for the Black students that go there. I will say that King prepares you for college, especially if you are in the AVID program. I feel like I was already ahead of my other friends that went to different schools when it came to applying for college and being prepared for your Essay questions! The food was Not so great, but the facilities were good. Its a very BIG school with ALOT of clubs to choose from and just like any other high school you have some Awesome teachers and some not so great. The Administration was open when it came to listening to your concerns about changes that we wanted to make or programs that we wanted to create. When it came to my Junior year, I opted to take classes at the Community College & I received some push back at first but when I proved that I was able to do it, I graduated with 15 college credits King is a great school
What I like about my school is the environment, education, and involvement opportunities. Students and teachers are very friendly, positive, and encouraging. Many education classes are offered for students to explore their field of interests and some are even helpful to prepare you for college, such as AP courses and AVID. There are over hundreds of clubs on campus as well that you can choose from and some may be the right fit for you! What I dislike is the food and I would prefer more nutritious and healthy options that can be easily affordable for those who receive a lower income. Also, my school still portrays a lack of diversity as a lot of minorities, asians and blacks, are still being bullied and looked down upon by other students.
