When growing up on Marthas Vineyard you are exposed to the same people all of your life. The community is extremely close which leaves little opportunity for new experiences. Although a close community can be beneficial in many areas it is also harmful to one's self-worth. I have noticed many of my peers finding the idea of leaving the island daunting, often setting lower expectations for their futures. While some have become suffocated and miserable by the island and wish to get as far away as possible. It would be beneficial for MVRHS students to have more opportunities for students to push out of their comfort zones. This could include overnight volunteer work on the mainland or simply more workshops exposing students to the endless possibilities the world has to offer. If these steps were taken students taste for the unfamiliar would be satisfied while also providing the more reserved students the opportunity to apply themselves.
Overall, my experience at MVRHS was a good one. Like any other high school, there were good moments and bad ones. I had close relationships with both my teachers and school administration that evolved over my four years there, and I still maintain those relationships to this day. Some teachers I did not maintain a relationship with either due to retirement or a poor experience in the classroom, which some members of administration did not act upon in a way that my classmates would have liked. The sports and the extracurriculars were great, but I definitely think that both areas could be improved when it comes to inclusivity. I think coming off of two very long COVID years has been hard on the school, but I think that faculty and students alike will be able to come together and improve the school so that it regains the same energy it had prior to the pandemic.
At MVRHS, administrators care more about keeping everyone in line than students happiness. As an alumni, I do not know one student satisfied with their school experience. Horrible teachers who don’t prepare their students properly for tests such as the SAT, ACT, etc. Facilities are outdated and awful- custodial staff would put out buckets and garbage cans to catch rain falling through holes in the ceiling.
