I applied here because I liked the kinship between the students. That's the best part about MAST is the way everyone's really helpful and nice and considerate. It was definitely a culture shock to go from a middle school environment of backstabbing and lies to a place where everyone wants to do good things and be good people. The food is awesome! And it is a lot of homework and can get overwhelming but the teachers are really understanding and engaging and literally, EVERYONE goes to extra help. The NJROTC stuff isn't that bad either. If you end up not liking it, just keep your uniform in good shape, your shoes shiny, and know your inspection facts and basic drill moves and you'll be fine. Marine Bio is the hardest freshman class for most, followed by CAD. Make lots of study guides and flashcards for Marine Bio and download whatever software you use for CAD on your home computer. Science is a huge part of MAST, so make sure you really love the subject before joining. Awesome school!
The school itself has given me many opportunities. I am currently doing a research project at the NOAA lab, which no other school would have that opportunity. The NJROTC has helped me build leadership qualities I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The school environment, however, was not the best. They promote more of a more competitive than a collaborative learning environment. Many people there only look out for themselves ad will not hesitate to throw someone under the bus to help themself. I hope that the school is able to promote a stronger community where people genuinely care about each other and do not view someone else's win as their own personal loss.
The Marine Academy of Science and Technology(MAST) is an outdoor high school campus located on one of New Jersey’s beaches. For future Marine Biology or Marine Science majors, there is no better hands on experience. Both on the shore itself, and on our 65 foot research vessel, the R/V Blue Sea. MAST is a welcoming school, and it’s students are committed to academic integrity, honor, courage, commitment, and learn valuable leadership skills through the Navy Junior ROTC program. Good luck on your application!
