MBMS is the only middle school in Manhattan Beach. Five grammar schools have 5th grade classes that move into the school - quiet a different experience and student population from what the kids are used to. There is an unarmed police officer on campus at all times, along with staff and parent volunteers at lunchtime. The kids have the option of playing organized sports at lunchtime, and/or doing other classroom activities. Many teachers eat lunch in their classrooms and let the kids hang with them in the classrooms at nutrition break and lunchtime. There are two full time nurses - they are responsible and responsive to the needs of the students. They are also very caring. My kids have not had any issues with bullying nor have I ever heard of any. Middle school kids are quirky and going through tremendous changes - the staff gets that, they will all tell you that they love working with kids this age - and welcome the challenges with a smile.

John Jackson is our amazing principal. At the beginning of each school year he tells the new students to introduce themselves to them - and keep introducing them until he knows their names. He DOES know the name of every student very quickly into the school year. He is a gem - fair, calm, consistent. Jackson returns emails in a snap - really - and will go out of his way to work anything out. The office staff is overloaded and overworked. They have help from 8th grade students, and Helen is on the ball. She knows everything about everything and is also a great communicator. I am a volunteer art teacher and have been for 10 years. The teachers are supportive and often do the art projects with their students when they have time. MBMS has a program for the special needs children, which puts them with other students at the school at lunchtime and after school. Both benefit - its called the friendship circle. There is a dress code, but it is loosely enforced. Jackson doesn't get involved - mainly the teachers will talk to a student if she or he is dressing inappropriately.
Beautiful gym, buildings and classrooms are nice. NO air conditioning in some classes so it gets hot! There are portable classrooms since there are so many students. The pool needs a major upgrade.
