As an alum, I found Maine South to offer a high quality education, with plenty of curricular and extracurricular opportunities, but also a culture that can be obnoxious and even toxic. As of the most recent report, the school is 84% white, and as a student there it seemed even whiter than that. I felt Maine South was dominated by a wannabe "fraternity/sorority" culture of mostly conservative, upper-middle-class white students, who worship the highly rated football team and other sports teams. The stellar sports programs are at the center of Maine South's culture. However, there are also plenty of extracurricular opportunities for students with interests in arts, politics, or furthering their studies. Like at many high schools, this is where students who are not accepted by the school's conservative mainstream can often shine. Maine South offers a good college prep education, especially for those students involved in the school's robust accelerated/AP infrastructure are getting .

Maine South is probably the best out of the other Maine Township schools but definitely has its issues. The school has at least 20 spots where the roof leaks in hallways and classrooms and the school is infested with cockroaches, mice, and bugs (it was built on a dump).
The school has almost no diversity and is primarily conservative and middle class. The football program is generously funded, taking money from maintenance and other programs in the school.
At Maine South, I have had more bad teachers than good ones, the worst threatening students and being inappropriate towards students and the best willing to get to know students and help them achieve their goals.
The school has a massive drug and alcohol problem, and vaping is getting out of control. There have been new measures to prevent vaping- I am not sure what.
If you find a good group of friends and activities you enjoy, you will have a great time at Maine South. You get what you put in.
Maine South is an prime example of what a high school should be. With great academics, teachers, school culture, and the resources provided, it is no surprise that this school is one of the best in the state. Some changes that I would personally make as a Junior at Maine South high school are the diversity and the food provided. There is very little diversity of students and teachers through the entire school and I feel like different cultures are not completely represented because of the lack of diversity. The food is decent, what you'd expect of a typical high school, but I believe it is overpriced for what it is and it doesn't seem sanitary. Overall, however, Maine South truly achieves excellence and never stops impressing me as the years go by!
