Mahtomedi Highschool has a great academic program with a lot of fun extracurriculars, but the community leaves much to be desired. I have experienced subtle racism from both students and staff at mahtomedi which lines up with the schools reputation of being racist and prepy. There is a very prevalent clique culture at the school which alienates a lot of students that haven't been a part of the community from a young age. At sporting events, you may be discouraged from and pushed away from certain parts of the bleachers because they are "reserved" for only popular students, even if the spaces aren't taken up. If you are a POC be aware that people will ask to touch your hair/ask you inappropriate questions. Most interactions with established cliques are passive aggressive and predatory in nature. People often befriend others for novelty rather than the content of one's character. Teachers are good at teaching, but the environent the school makes it hard for unorthidox people to thrive.
I went to Mahtomedi k-12 and the teachers were very helpful, most of the time. I also noticed when I applied myself and got connected with the school, my experience had improved. It is a very tightknit community so I can see why others would feel out of the loop if they don't branch out. Diversity is another factor at Mahtomedi. People of color would quite literally leave the school because they felt as if they didn't fit in. Now there are clubs to aid in that issue. It is in a primarily white area of Minnesota so it's not surprising that the school has little diversity.
Overall, the staff and students are easily able to connect, and the teachers are all very kind. In some basic subjects, the teachers are not of the best quality. However, in higher classes, the teachers are of exceptional quality. Diversity-wise, there is a heavy concentration of white students. There are few resources for BIPOC students, such as clubs, assemblies, or class material, that covers race and its prevalence in society. There are decent resources for LGBTQIA+ students, such as clubs and historical context. Assemblies often address mental health, and there are school counselors. Overall, it's a mainly rich, white school, but it's education is above-standard and I have hopes it will begin to become a safe space for non-white, non-cis, LGBTQIA+ students based on the administration.
