A hidden gem! My two kids attended this school and both loved the school. Longfellow has a strong sense of community as one of the smaller schools in the county. My children thrived both academically and socially. It is a diverse school (racially and socioeconomically) but many who chose to reside in Columbia and surrounding areas, moved to this region for just that reason. If this is a concern to you, LoES probably would be a blessing for your kids, but not right for you.
My son has flourished at Longfellow Elementary. When he started kindergarten he was diagnosed with developmental delays and had an IEP. The special education services helped him to catch up to his peers and now he's even taking gifted and talented courses at recess. The teachers are caring and innovative. The kindergarten teachers especially are top-notch. Being a Title I school we are fortunate to have extra resources which give us lower student-teacher ratios and Title I nights. The school is very diverse in regards to both racial and socioeconomic status. The PTA organizes many after school activities and the fantastic Spring Fair.
